I know this may be a weird combination, but should anyone ever have to install VMWare vCenter 4. 0 and MS SQL including Reporting Service on the identical machine (Windows Server 08 64 Bit), this is how it is done. Get warned, VMWare will ultimately not support this configuration, but I had no problems with that up to this point.
VMWare vCenter uses a SQL database (SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 when this writing). While you may use a remote database we had the need for a local installation as well as we needed SQL Server Canceling service installed. After installing the Windows Computer we did a comprehensive install of SQL Server 2005 including SP3. We did do that with SQL 2008 just before, but SQL 2008 is no longer using IIS to manage the Reporting Services and that made it very difficult to regulate the 2 applictions and their ports they use (hint: overlapping plug-ins are 80 and 443).
As soon as you installed SQL 2005, it is possible to install vSphere vCenter several. During the installation you may change the ports that will vCenter uses, however this does not work. SQL Report Services must have port 443 for intrinsic communication. I had changed this port in vCenter to 444 when working with SQL 2008, but apparently vCenter ignores that port setting nonetheless locks port 443 in the future one – making Reporting Services kaput. So, install vCenter along with the default ports.
Now go into IIS (hint: SQL 2005 requires you install ALL IIS solutions in Server 2008) together with change the port for the reporting services to interface 81. There is you don’t need to touch port 443 to obtain MS SQL Reporting Services to work. Now open up your Report Services Configuration tool and choose the Web Service Id tab. Set the appPool to “Classic. NET” for the Report Server and also the Report Manager.
